Curriculum Resources

These curriculum resources are developed by teachers for their students to meet classroom needs in developing the infographic project. It includes assessments, lesson plans, unit plans, and peer critique guidelines for learning to evaluate and improve infographic drafts.

Lesson: Infographic Distillation Rob Lamb 15-20min. Students work together to describe the essence of a single infographic in a short sentence, to reiterate the importance of concise word choice in creating infographics. DOCX
Lesson: Star Wars Episode$: Trip to the Data Mine Matthew Stevens 45-60min. Shows the thought process that goes into visualizing credible data, how to mine data, and give a quick overview of the entire infographic process. DOCX
Lesson: Physical Infographics Cynthia Graville 60-120min. Students work in groups to practice data representation using objects or drawings with the physical world as their backdrop. PDF

Lesson: Frankensteining Infographics, Picking the Best Parts of the Brain Rob Lamb 30-35min. Students are given several different data sources and pre-made infographics. The task is to physically cut these various sources up to create a novel infographic. This activity focuses on design, narrative, and data representation. DOCX
Lesson: Topic Chooser Helper Rob Lamb 45min. This activity assists students in finding an infographic research topic that can be backed up with scientific data, has appropriate scope, demonstrates personal and social relevance, and satisfies other instructor determined criteria. DOCX
Lesson: Evaluate the Infographic Rob Lamb 15-45min. Students find an existing infographic from the web and go through a protocol to provide critical feedback and evaluation of the presentation of data. DOCX
Lesson: Infographic Benchmark Rob Lamb 45min. This activity is a follow up to the Topic Chooser Helper. Students work to refine their research, articulate key ideas they want to communicate, and sketch a draft of how they will present data. DOCX

In this unit, students make one infographic examining trends, evidence, and impacts of global climate change, and a second communicating the changes needed at the global, local, and individual levels to mitigate human impact on the carbon cycle.
